Microsoft has recently halted the rental and purchase of movies and TV shows through Xbox consoles and the Microsoft Store on Windows PCs, according to the company’s newly updated support page and multiple news reports.

Users who have previously purchased content can still access their titles via the "Movies & TV" app, as their existing viewing rights remain intact. However, all new transactions for buying or renting films and television programs have been blocked. Microsoft has clarified that no refunds will be issued for these discontinued new transactions.

A notable exception applies to movies part of the Movies Anywhere program. Eligible U.S. customers can still sync such content to other participating stores within the program, enabling continued access across multiple platforms.

This adjustment means users will need to turn to alternative platforms to acquire new video content, reflecting a strategic shift in Microsoft’s digital entertainment distribution efforts. The company has not yet provided specific reasons for discontinuing the service or indicated whether related functionalities might be reinstated in the future.
